How long you have been making soap?

I have been making soap for almost 6 years. A good friend of mine pushed me into it because she knew I couldn't use anything that was commercially out there and making your own was so much better. I researched, made my first batch and she was right!! Our soaps are definitely a labor of love, never tested on animals, just family (the tortoise, believe it or not, is too fast for us)

What motivates you?

My daughters. They are just as much into crafts as I am and love making things as much as i do. My oldest is already involved in the family business and has begun to take over the glycerin side of the business

What is your favorite product you have ever made?

My Abuelita's Herbal Salve. First it is named for the woman who is my all around inspiration and was the healer of my family spiritually and physically. Second it is an amazing product in that it is an all natural herb filled healing remedy that has helped many of my customers with various skin ailments.

Have you ever participated in a secret pal swap?

Although I am swap addicted and have participated in numerous other swaps both knitting and soap related, this will be my first time participating in a secret pal swap and I am very excited for it!!

Advice to aspiring artists?

Never curtail your imagination. Be free to express yourself. Try new things.

I've been dyeing fiber for about a year and I've been knitting for alittle over 2 years.

I got started dyeing when one of my secret pals sent me some Romneyroving and a few packets of kool aid.

This is my first time doing the blogspot Secret Pal swap.

There are always new and unique yarns and drop spindles coming out.

There may be stitch markers and maybe even handmade needles in the future.

I love yarn and I love the things you can do with it. I'm motivatedby seeing what else I can do and what other people can do with what I've made.

My advice to fiber artists is to not be intimidated by something thatis supposed to be difficult. It's often much easier than you think.

It's hard to pick a favorite but my favorite drop spindle is actually one that was a special commission. It was black with a spiderweb and spider.

My favorite yarn is one that's already been sold. It was just a domestic wool blend but I loved the colors - Sunlit Swamp.

I'm not sure that any other fiber artists are my role models but there are definitely many whose work I adore. Just check out my favorites list on etsy to find lots of other great shops.

How long you have been, dying yarn, making stitch markers, knitting ?
I've been beading since I was a kid, dyeing fabric forabout 15 years, spinning for a year or so and actuallymaking stitch markers for around 6 months. Right now,Two Ply Two only has stitch markers available. I hope to have natural handspun up for sale before the end ofSP11

What motivates you?
I can't help but create things. If I don't have an outlet, I subconsciously find one! Most often, I aminspired by nature and things in the environment around me. AT other times I read or hear about a need and think of a project that will fit. I'm thrilled to have a place to be able to share my work with others.

What is your favourite product you have ever made?
I'm currently most excited about my lace-maker stitchmarkers. I read on a blog a few months ago about someone who was looking for a smaller stitch marker to use on smaller needles, but couldn't find any. I decided to try making a smaller double stitch marker that fits up to a US size 3 on the smaller end and upto a US size 7 on the larger.

Have you ever participated in a secret pal swap?
Yes, I was in SP10 and am currently in SP11. I also participated in the Spring Felted Bag Exchange.

Advice to aspiring artists?
Do what you are passionate about, have patience with yourself, and make time for your art.

Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artists you consider role models?
I was originally an art teacher, so I have a ton of influences. Some of the most important ones are Elizabeth Murray, Faith Ringgold, Nancy Crow, Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler, Claus Oldenburg and SolLe Wit.

How long you have been, dying yarn, making stitch markers, knitting (whatever is applicable)
I have been dyeing 'officially' now for about a year and a half. I have been crafting/creating/knitting for over 30 years. I began my artistic career in the traditional vein with a degree in Fine Arts and eventually my creative zest has become almost exclusively focused on yarn, knitting and designing.

What motivates you
Addiction... I am compulsively creative. If I am in need or looking for something, be it new cabinets in the kitchen, or new clothes, or a new table... my first impulse is to see what I can make myself... if I don't have time to put anything together myself, then I go shopping. As well, I am plain addicted to knitting... the possibilities are never exhausted, and I never get tired of it. I have to really curb the whole 'startitis' thing. I do finish, although it takes a while sometimes!

I react quite strongly to colour and texture. When I put something together, it's a result of a zest or a desire to evoke a particular mood or sensation. Most of my colours are related to a concept or a physicality - ie. Tuscany, in my mind, is evocative of Tuscan sunflowers and farmhouses; Vancouver Island is named for the colours of the Island itself, Thyme and Sweetgrass are self-expanatory, etc. I often have colours named before they are dyed. For me it is like painting, and when I paint (rarely these days!) I have the painting in my mind's eye before I begin. It doesn't always come out exactly as anticipated, but the visualization is often the motivator.

What is your favourite product you have ever made
I have tried to come up with something here, but I can't. I usually love everything I finish. I love most things 'more' while I'm actually working on them than after they are finished. If I don't, I rip before I get anywhere near the finish line.

Have you ever participated in a secret pal swap
Honestly, no. I've either been at a point in my life where I couldn't afford the time or what have you, or missed the sign-up deadline.

Advice to aspiring artists
Don't give up! Yeah, I know, everyone says so, but it really is true. Be passionate about your work and it will show to others.

Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artists you consider role models?Many many many... I think the first knitting blog I ever came across, years ago, was Annie Modesit's Modeknit. Then it was Jenna Wilson's The Girl From Auntie... and of course Knitty came onto the scene. At some point, I realized there was awesome potential in knitting and designing, and finally decided to play around with dyeing and totally fell in love with it.

How long have you been dyeing yarn/beading?
I've been beading for about 8 years. I took a class during grad school, and have been hooked ever since! I started dyeing a bit last year with food coloring and acid dyes earlier this year.

What motivates you?
Everything! I get inspired by nature, clothing, book characters, you name it!!

What was your favorite product you have ever made?
Currently it's my Hogwarts stitch markers. I designed a set for each of the 4 houses, and I love each and every one of them.

How long have you been dyeing yarn/beading?
I’ve only been dyeing yarn and beading for a short while, however I’ve had a love for clay since I was about nine years old. My mom and I would crowd around the kitchen table for hours making little animals and such with clay.

What motivates you?
I think the gratification of seeing the finished product. You work so hard over something and when you step back to look at it, you think “Wow! I actually made that!” Also, I get extra excited when I see other knitters/crochetiers getting excited about my products.

What was your favorite product you have ever made?
Hand spun and dyed sock yarn. Talk about gratification!!!

Yes, I was a participant in SP 6 & 7.

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists?
Have patience; it can get a little cumbersome at times, but it’s always so worth it! Write down your ultimate goal and put it in a place you’ll always see it when you’re beading/whatever you do. It will make that goal seem so much more attainable.

The Yarn Harlot; she’s so smart, funny and witty. She’s such an inspiration to anyone that has any interest in yarn or the fiber projects.

How long have you been dyeing yarn/beading?
Your interview question reminds me that I need to create a tvyarn colorway for the "60 Minutes" tv show. But I digress, what was the question? Oh, how long... I've been in love with color my whole life, but started seriously working with it about seven years ago. The pursuit of color (pursuit, that reminds me to create a tvyarn colorway for "The Fugitive" movie... gotta love Harrison Ford) led me to knitting, gardening (I failed miserably with this), painting with watercolors, then beading, then creating polymer clay beads, oil painting, dyeing cotton fabric, art quilting, and now hand painting yarn with dye.

What motivates you? I really don't know. Seriously. The motivation and drive come from within, and then when you starting looking around, you see inspiration everywhere. I write these little notes to myself, like "Colors in Gilmore Girls show?" or "caramel and browns, mochas". There's a note in front of me now that says "red/cool violets/green?".

What was your favourite product you have ever made? The "True Grit" colorway in my tvyarn line is my favorite product, right now. I love that movie and I love those colors.

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap? Oh yes, many times; I've been a spoiler and a spoilee. I'm in SP10.

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists?
Pursue your passion. Don't just think about it, scale it down to something doable and then do it.

Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artist you consider role models?
The Amish quilters have always inspired me. Those women were real artists. The Sweet Georgia blog and fiber dyeing was an influence. The contemporary art quilter Nancy Crow is amazing - huge influence.

How did you get started?

The idea of starting an online shop came from picking up a copy of Vogue Knitting International back in 2004 and realising what Americans had available and English knitters didn’t. From there I was on a mission to create a place where English knitters could find some of the most amazing yarns and knitting accessories. Foreign Strand was launched in July 2006 and it’s the UK's only online store dedicated to knitting products from the Americas, however we are currently re-launching with some new products which will be sourced also from other parts of the world.

Do you knit, do your employees knit on the job?

Knitting is my life and work. I knit, when I have the time, which lately is not much. I don’t employ people to knit, I just ask my very dear knitter friends to help me out, in exchange for some new yarns or needles!

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap?
I have been a participant since SP9 after a friend participated in SP8. I am now hooked so I expect I will carry on until the day I don’t have any more yarn in my house!

How long have you been dyeing yarn/beading?
I’ve been beading over 2 years now and have recently launched my own line of jewelry in addition to the stitch markers, etc. The shop address can be found within the above link. For SP10 participants, the 10% discount will apply to both shops!

What motivates you?
As always, it’s the beads. Sometimes the designs and colors just captivate me and I HAVE to make something with them! I’m head over heels for handmade lampwork glass too!

What was your favourite product you have ever made? Ever?
That’s tough, but right now my favorite is the "Pastel Bells" stitch marker set – they’re colorful and they jingle! What more could you want? I think I should make a set for myself – LOL!

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap?
Yes, a couple of them! The last one was probably about a year ago, but it was a lot of fun! There’s nothing like getting a package full of knitting stuff in the mail!

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists?

How long have you been dyeing yarn/beading?
I’ve been knitting for 25+ years, and my partner for about two. Haven’t done much dyeing, just the kool-aid variety . . . and the occasional accidental tea dye job.

What motivates you?
We really wanted to make products available to our local market that weren’t otherwise available. Also, we really liked the idea of providing people with a web source where the products are carefully chosen, well photographed and described.

What was your favorite product you have ever made?
Well, we’re still pretty new so we don’t have a lot of patterns up yet that we’ve designed. In terms of product? The O-Wool is pretty fantastic, and the Silkdream is, well, dreamy to work with. We have Reynolds Whiskey coming soon, and it is really fabulous.

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap?
Nope, unfortunately not. They’ve always been closed by the time we figured out it was going on.

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists?
If it’s after dinner time and you notice you’ve made a mistake, don’t try to pull it out and fix it. Go to bed instead. Trust us on this one.

Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artist you consider role models?
Debbie New is an absolutely outstanding fibre artist. We are also in awe of the knitters of the British Isles and elsewhere who invented, refined and passed down techniques as complicated as Sheland lace, Fair Isle, and steeking . . . all without benefit of books or the internet.

About 7 years, I started knitting when I was in high school. A girl in my class gave her friend a hand-knit scarf and hat. When I saw this I had to learn how. I've been knitting ever since.

What motivates you?
The need to be creative and wanting to challenge myself.

What was your favorite product you have ever made?

I will always love the first knitting bag I designed, The Knitter's Purse. It launched my business. But, The Knitter's Satchel is currently my favorite. The pockets keep me organized, I can completely close it and the shape is great. Just don't ask me which is my favorite color because I love them all.

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap?

No, not yet. It seems whenever I think of it to sign up I've missed the deadline.

Any advice for knitters?

Measure! Before starting a project measure yourself and compare it to the measurements of the schematic. Check the length, bust, waist, armhole length, sleeve length and neckline depth. You can even compare the measurements to another sweater that you want to copy the fit. It's so much easier to fix size problems before you get started knitting. Take the time to do this because you'll end up with a better fitting garment in the end.

Do you knit at work?

Absolutely. Knitting is my work. I design knitwear for books, yarn companies and magazines including Knitty.com, Vogue Knitting and Knit Simple.

The Alchemic Dragon was founded in 2000, this has been a labour oflove. From kitchen to kitchen our products have never been tested on pets, unless you include husbands!

If I employed more than myself, of course there would allow it, unlesswe were in the middle of making soap, which could get messy.

What motivates you? It's fun to come up with new designs, especially socks (my favorite thing to design), and it's really great to be able to share the designs with others. There's nothing like seeing a stranger in one of your designs!

What was your favourite product you have ever made? It was a design for the upcoming book Big Girl Knits 2 - I can't tell you about it since the book isn't published yet, but I am so proud of it! It turned out beautifully and was really fun to knit.

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap? Yup - I've been in all of them since SP6.

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists? Follow your passion, and treat yourself as a professional right from the start. The great thing about doing a fiber-related business is that you can make it as small or big as you want, and can do it in very small chunks of time. I've got two small children at home, so it's important for me to have something very flexible. I love that I can bring my knitting with me anywhere and work on it a row or two at a time.

Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artist you consider role models? I took a six-week sweater design class from Leigh Radford right as I was starting out and got tons of invaluable advice - she is such an incredible creative thinker. I am also a total Nancy Bush fanatic and really respect and look up to her as a designer.

3.8 ounces total - 8 mini batts of handdyed handcarded 100% merino wool, in shades of green, purple, and red. This was blended in my drum carder. The batts are super soft and easy to spin. Also suitable for felting

scrumptious supersoft merino wool was first handpainted with acid dyes and then handspun and plied on my Lendrum spinning wheel. This hank contains shades of blue, turquoise, yellow, and green. The yardage is more than enough to knit a hat.

How long have you been dyeing yarn/beading? I've been dyeing for a little over a year, and beading for more than 2 years.

What motivates you? My love of DIY crafts and the desire to produce products that fellow knitters/crocheters/spinners will enjoy. I love experimenting and creating different blends of harmonizing colors, and definitely enjoy seeing them knit up. And my color inspirations often come from things I see in my life, from my view of Central Park to a pint of Cherry Vanilla frozen yogurt!

What was your favourite product you have ever made? For sock yarns, It's hard to say, since I've created so many colorways that I want to keep for myself. However, my favorite handspun product I've made so far is the "Bay Breeze" that is in my shop.

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap? No, SP9 is my first, and it's been great so far! I have a wonderful spoiler, and hopefully, my spoilee feels the same about me!

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists? Don't be afraid to experiment and figure out what methods work best for you. Also, the sense of accomplishment and the compliments from happy customers are well worth the hours of obsessing over achieving the perfect products!

How long have you been dyeing yarn? About 7 months. Like so many others, I started with the Kool-aid,which I still love to use, but recently moved to professional Acid-dyes. I'm currently playing withabout 4 different methods of dyeing, but mostly I'm using the Microwave.

What motivates you?
Producing tactile, sensual and vibrant things. Also, as a "bigger,faster" knitter, who hates small needles and thin yarns, I found that most of the handdyed yarns on the market are all for socks, and rarely do you get stitchmarkers for needles above7mm. As an entrepenuer, I saw the available gap in the market, making a product that I love,so I decided to just go for it.

What was your favourite product you have ever made?
Some chunky weight Tie-dyed Alpaca. When I bought it, it just feltlike a cloud, and it immediately wanted to become a skyscape. Some yarns just tell youwant they ned to become after all! So, I tied the skeins together, wrapped them in the correct manner,and then dip dyed them. I used a pale blue bath, and dipped so that half of the skein was aslightly deeper blue than the other. My fav Stitchmarker is this one (see attached). As it is not forsale, the picture isn't particularly clear, but I just love that the bead has a scarf in it! From a technicalview point, I've made better since this one, and some of the beads I get in the random ebay auctions I tend to buy from are simply to die for, but this one just makes me smile. It's definitly a keeper!

How long have you been dyeing yarn/beading?
I’ve been making Shawl Pins and Stitch Markers for 5 months now. But I’ve been a Fiber Artist for most of my life – learned to crochet at 4, knit at 26, spin and weave at 30 – fiber is a life long, constant passion of mine and creating these lovely accessories to add to my fiber creations is just a further extension of that.

What motivates you? Everything! I love creating different shapes and designs out of metal to accentuate the beauty that comes through on all the wonderful knit/crocheted items. I love shapes and curves, spirals are a particular favorite and you will find them in some way in most all my designs.

I would have to say my favorites are my free form shapes - the ones I just let happen while I’m working with the metal.

Don’t be afraid to try anything.

How long have you been dyeing yarn/beading?
I'm a retail store owner, occasional dyer, lace and bead knitting fanatic, spinner and knitting needle distributor. I taught myself to knit at age 10 and decided then I wanted to own a yarn store. I thought it would never happen. I'm a lucky person to be able to live my dream.

What motivates you?
The creative process. Ripping things out doesn't deter me.

What was your favourite project you have ever made?
It would have to be my first project, knit at age 10 (well, ok age 11 too). It was a cables and lace afghan. My mom never thought I'd learn to knit on my own. I gave her the completed afghan and she kept and used it until she passed away, many, many years later.

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap?
No! I've always been interested but I thought it would be "cheating" for me to participate.

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists?
Enjoy the process...it isn't always about finishing the design as much as it is about learning and creating.

how they got started, the background of their business?
In 2000 I left my demanding job at an Aerospace company with the intent of taking the month of December off and getting myself reemployed after the New Year. During my break I decided that I needed some way to keep track of my gigantic knitting stash. Being a database person I began developing the product now known as NeedleTrax. Next came The Sole Solution and The Knitter's Desktop Companion and I started retailing/wholesaling my software. This opened the door to adding interesting knitting items and the next I knew I had a 1300 square foot shop and well over 4,000 products! It has been an amazing 6 years and I've loved every minute of it!

Unfortunately (ok fortunately) we are so busy that we don't have time to knit at work. We try to ship the same day whenever we can! We always have time to pet yarns and pick out our next project!

How did you get started, what is the background of your business?

We really enjoyed knitting socks and realized that a lot of knitters are also crazy about knitting socks. Do you knit, do your employees knit on the job? (because that is the dream of all knitters)
Because we are an internet business we dont actually knit on the job. But we do knit socks all the time. We test all of our new yarns by knitting socks for ourselves. That way we know how the yarn works up and if we love it we make it available on our website. One of the benefits of the job is that we get a lot of free yarn!

How long have you been beading?
I have been beading for over a year now, but I have been involved with crafting, painting, creating, etc. for more years than I can remember.

What motivates you?
The love of creating something with my hands, the same thing that motivates me with knitting. Since I have added beading to my daily life I have a constant sense of accomplishment and I’m ridiculously happy. Who wouldn’t be motivated by that?! :)

What was your favourite product you have ever made?
I don’t have one favorite, but I do always like anything created with a handmade bead. The time and effort that goes into creating each bead is incredible - I hope I do them justice!

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap?
Yes! Two very successful Secret Pal swaps, SP6 and SP7 (and a couple of other knitterly swaps as well) - I was spoiled rotten and I am so happy to be able to help others spoil their Pals this time!

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists?
Yes, create what you love. Sure, if you are going to sell your work, you want to appeal to as many people as possible, but if you love what you are doing, the finished product will be better because you will take care with it and have pride in it. Your happiness will show in your work and that will appeal to everyone.

Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artist you consider role models?
In truth, I am inspired not so much by a particular designer, but by the beads themselves. If I see a particularly beautiful bead, I will want to create something with it. Each design starts with the focal bead and goes from there. The colors, the size of the accent beads, and even the size of ring that fits on the needle is decided by the focal bead and what will look best with it.

How long have you been dyeing yarn/beading? I've been beading since grad school, I went to a local bead store and took a class with my mom. I've been stamping cards for about a year.

What motivates you? Everything! I get ideas from all over the place. Some times it's from colors I see in nature, other times I just start from nothing and see how things come together.

What was your favourite product you have ever made? I actually really love the "Waltz" stitch markers. And some of the "millifiore" glass bead stitch markers.

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap? I've been a participant from SP5-present, as well as a hostess from SP7-present. I love getting to know so many new people!!

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists? Go crazy! If you get an idea, go for it! Don't be afraid to try something new, you might just come up with something really special!

How long have you been dyeing yarn/beading?
I have been dyeing yarn for about a year, and I opened my Etsy shop in late April, 2006.

What motivates you?
I'm always trying to come up with a new colorway or combination or technique that I haven't seen before. My dyeing tools include all kinds of odd objects, including saran wrap, cable ties, skewers, spray bottles, syringes... Every single skein of yarn I make must be something that I would personally want to knit with.

What was your favourite product you have ever made?
Back to the Phosphor again! Just last night I was listening to an awesome mix CD in my car that a good friend made for me, and I heard the song that inspired the colorway to begin with. I can't remember the name of it, but the chorus goes, "Danger, danger! High voltage! When we kiss, when we touch..." and it's just a super fun song. I started thinking about how to make a really bright green pop out and look super vibrant, and Phosphor was born. My boyfriend gets the naming credit because when he looked at it, his first thought was of the old-school monochrome computer monitors.
Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap?
I did the hand-dyed sock yarn swap a few months ago, and ended up paired with Scout as my secret pal. When she received my yarn she posted a picture of it on her blog. I'm so jealous of her beautiful clear blue New Mexico skies and all that wonderful natural light.

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists?
Use quality materials. If you're going to put all the time and love into making something, start with good yarn so you can treasure it forever.

Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artist you consider role models?
I'd have to say Scout, Sweet Georgia, and Sundara were big inspirations when I first got into dyeing yarn commercially.

How long have you been dyeing yarn?

I have been dyeing yarn for a year, I just started selling my creations in September. I began with Kool-aid and now work with Acid dyes. There are so many color combinations when you start to use proffesional dyes.

What motivates you?

Everything motivates me! I see pretty color combos everywhere and make sure to write my ispirations down immediately. Right now I have themes that inspire me ( tropical flowers...etc.)

What was your favourite product you have ever made?

I have several favorite yarn colors. I have them sitting in a big bin in my living room so I can glance at them once in awhile. It takes all my effort not to snatch one up and start knitting with it! My inventory would be dented a great deal if I did!

Have you ever been a participant in a Secret Pal swap?
I have participated in SP6 and SP9. I was nominated both times for best pal. I also began and hosted the "Gimme some Needles"Needle Exchange.

Any advice for the fiber/beading artists?

Have fun! Try lots of different things and try your best not to get discouraged and Have patience. Thats the hardest part for a lot of people including myself.

Are there any designers, fiber artists or any other artist you consider role models?

Dani from Sunshine Yarns! She was the one who sent me wool and Koolaid a year ago, and she was my very first customer! Dani is my biggest cheerleader. I really respect her because she embraces life and all the hurddles.... And , she dyes BEAUTIFUL sock yarns.

How long have you been dyeing yarn?

I've been handpainting yarn and roving since a fateful night in November two years ago. It was late (after 11:30 pm) and I had just finished reading about someone's experience with yarn and color. As it happened, I had a skein of white Lana Grossa wool in my stash, a microwave, a little white vinegar and some McCormick's food coloring (in those little, tiny plastic bottles!) and I NEEDED to try this out. I posted about it on my first Blogger blog (I think it's probably in some archive somewhere under 'Dye-ing For Oranges'). The yarn was so beautiful...SO beautiful! I was hooked. I bought my first real dyes about 6 months later and I've been at it ever since.

What motivates you?

Fear. Fear motivates me. Okay...Just kidding. Not when it comes to fiber. Vibrant color motivates me. Rainbows motivate me. The interplay between brights and black fascinates me. My colorways are sometimes complex, but seldom are they considered 'subtle.' I figure there are so many excellent fiber artists around who do 'subtle' so well that I can paint my rainbows in brilliant, saturated colors.

What was your favourite product you have ever made?

I don't know that I can honestly choose a favorite item. I think my favorite fiber to paint would be Merino/silk roving. Though the fibers are well carded together, the blend causes the dye to strike a little bit differently throughout the roving. When it's dry, you can see the gleam of the silk through the matte of the Merino. I've done many different colorways in this fiber, but my favorite would have to be the one that's sitting in my spinning bag right now, the one I'm keeping for myself!

Any advice for the fiber artists?

Advice. Absolutely.
You have far more creativity than you suppose.
Don't be afraid to try something different.
Use the best materials you can afford.
